Carpentry & Built-Ins for Everett homes.
Everett's 2025 demolition ordinance covers buildings 80 or more years old, but it only applies when half or more of a building comes down. A new built-in or a trim job doesn't get near it.
If a lumber drop or a cut station needs street space, Everett's city services commission has to allot it, and the area must be fenced off and lit at night.
Everett rules that matter for carpentry & built-ins.
Permits for street space and dumpsters
Using part of a public way while repairing a building takes a permit from Everett's city services commission and a bond. The space has to be barricaded and lit at night, with a safe path kept for walkers. Dumpster and POD permits are filed in person at the Engineering Department in City Hall and signed off by the fire and police chiefs. [1][2]
Demolition review at 80 years
Since 2025, a permit to raze 50% or more of a building that is 80 or more years old by assessor records, or on the State or National Register, goes to the Everett Historical Commission. The Commission holds a hearing within 35 days, and a building it votes to preserve faces a six-month moratorium. [1]
One statewide building code. Massachusetts uses a single building code for every town: 780 CMR, now in its tenth edition. Your local building department enforces it and issues the permits. source
Dig Safe before digging. State law requires notice to Dig Safe at least 72 hours before digging, not counting weekends and legal holidays. That includes holes for deck footings. Call 811. source
