Built-ins, mantels, window seats and trim for Boston homes, from Beacon Hill to East Boston. Measured on site, built and finished by one crew.
Beacon Hill's houses came from Federal and Greek Revival builders like Asher Benjamin and Solomon Willard, and new trim should look like it belongs. We match profiles to what's in the room. The district commissions' review pages talk about exterior work, so an interior bookcase isn't their call, but a new front door surround seen from the street can be.
A built-in recessed into a wall means opening the wall, which is exactly the example ISD gives for a Short-Form permit. Saw work also keeps to Boston's 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. weekday window, since ordinance 16-26.4 covers alteration and repair, not just big construction.

ISD short-form vs. long-form permits
Boston's Inspectional Services Department issues a Short-Form permit for minor work that doesn't change a building's structure or use, like opening up a wall, and a Long-Form permit for work that does. Both are filed through the ISD online portal, and starting before the permit is issued can mean double the permit cost or a code violation. [1][2]
Historic district design review
Inside Boston's historic districts, exterior work needs commission approval before it starts. Back Bay reviews all proposed exterior work, Beacon Hill reviews exterior work visible from a public way, and the South End reviews front facades, visible rooftops and walls facing a public way. The commissions say not to buy materials until you're approved. [1][2][3][4]
Construction hours: 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. weekdays
City ordinance 16-26.4 limits building alteration and repair to 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. on weekdays. Anything outside that needs an Off Hours Permit from ISD, granted per event. [1][2]
One statewide building code. Massachusetts uses a single building code for every town: 780 CMR, now in its tenth edition. Your local building department enforces it and issues the permits. source
Dig Safe before digging. State law requires notice to Dig Safe at least 72 hours before digging, not counting weekends and legal holidays. That includes holes for deck footings. Call 811. source

Only if it opens up a wall or changes structure. A freestanding unit doesn't, but recessing shelves into a wall is the kind of minor alteration ISD covers with a Short-Form permit.
